I almost always answer that question with this question, How much time are you going to spend at a firing range becoming proficient with your handgun? Sadly the answers I receive often indicate that little to no time will be spent becoming proficient with the handgun due to busy work schedules or time involved raising and caring for a family. For those people I have tried to approach the issue of buying a handgun to their lifestyle.

The handgun that you purchase for self or home defense should meet three requirements; it should be safe to handle; it should be dependable so that it will always work when needed, and it should be simple to operate. Certainly a small frame, double action revolver meets all these requirements. The length and weight of the trigger pull required to cause the gun to fire makes it safe to handle. It cannot just go off; it takes a conscious effort to pull the trigger with enough force to overcome the eight to ten pounds needed to cause the gun to fire. Next, double action revolvers produced by major manufactures and shown due care are very dependable and will always function when needed. The technology is more than a hundred years old and has been improved many times by major manufactures. Lastly, nothing is simpler than a double action revolver; you move one button to open the gun, then load it, close it, and it is ready to fire. If you should pull the trigger and it does not fire, usually because of defective ammo, all you have to remember is to pull the trigger again.

The handgun you choose for concealed carry should also fit you. When gripped in your hand properly, your forearm and the apex of the barrel of the gun should form a straight line. Your index finger, trigger finger, should rest on the center of the trigger with the trigger bisecting the first pad of your finger. The center two fingers should wrap around the front strap of the gun’s grip so that the grip is pulled straight to the rear and into the web of your hand. The gun should be a natural extension of your arm and should point as naturally as you would point your index finger.

The weight of your concealed carry gun is also very important. You should be able to hold it pointed at your target for several minutes at a time without shaking or tiring. Modern materials and designs can produce excellent carry guns that weigh less than one pound. While lightweight guns are much easier to carry, they can also produce uncomfortable recoil when used as range guns. Heavier guns are more comfortable to shoot on the range, but they are difficult to carry concealed. You should understand that one gun rarely meets both concealed carry and range gun requirements.

The caliber is certainly important, but you must be able to shoot the caliber accurately. Unless you are an experienced shooter, I suggest you stay away from the larger, hotter calibers- .40 S&W, 45 ACP. Middle of the road calibers like 38 Spl and 9 mm are good choices, and ammo is more affordable and widely available. Small calibers like .22 LR and .25 ACP are not good choices for inexperienced shooters. They usually come in the small, cute guns, which should absolutely be avoided as well. They are what I call nose guns and should only be carried by a big guy who has no problem with getting up close and personal and sticking it up his attacker’s nose before shooting him.

If you have decided to purchase a double action revolver for concealed carry, you may want to ask your gun dealer to show you a S & W Model 442 as a standard to compare the dozens of small frame revolvers that are available. Don’t scrimp on price either; remember you are purchasing a tool you will use to defend your life or the lives of your loved ones. When shopping for a gun, visit several shops and talk cash instead of checks or cards. New guns do not have the markup of used guns, so don’t expect a big price break. Buying a used gun produced by a major manufacture can be an excellent way to save money when you pay cash.

In a later post, I will address the issue of buying a handgun if you are experienced or are willing to spend the time to become proficient with your handgun.

The Road Ahead

I'm still reeling from the election and it be awhile before I'm able to recover. It is now a fact, Barack Hussein Obama will be our next president. I know, it is unbelieveable that in one day American voters overturned more than 200 years of this great nation's history and turned this nation into a Socialist country. Not only will he be president but he will have almost a super majority of liberal, anti-gun Congress. That Congress is already planning to tax guns, ammo, and accessories out of the reach of most law abiding Americans. Guns and ammo are already flying off the shelves of gun shops and tables at gun shows. That Congress is working to save jobs of the auto industry but tens of thousands of jobs will be lost in the gun industry and they could care less. Their hate for law abiding gun owners is that strong.

It is times like these that always bring to mind the words of Thomas Jefferson, The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. The tyrants of a liberal, anti-American President and his liberal, anti- American Congress are standing outside the door. The following is from the National Rifle Association's, Institute for Legislative Action (ILA).

SOUTH CAROLINA

The 117th South Carolina General Assembly convened this week, and pro-gun State Representative Greg Delleney (R-43) has introduced legislation to make South Carolina a straight recognition state for Right-to-Carry (RTC) permits. H 3212 would remove from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) the authority to arbitrarily determine which permits issued by other states will be recognized in South Carolina. Instead, H 3212 would mandate that all valid RTC permits be recognized in South Carolina. This legislation will not only greatly increase the number of permits issued by other states that will be honored in South Carolina, but will also increase the number of states that will recognize a South Carolina permit. Please contact your State Representative at (803) 734-2402 and urge him or her to cosponsor this critical legislation. You may also want to take a moment to thank Representative Delleney for his efforts to promote ur Right to Keep and Bear Arms and our right to personal protection.

Hats off to the South Carolina Legislature

As 2006 draws to a close and South Carolina's legislature prepares for a new session in January we should look beyond all the things that they did not accompolish this year and give them praise for some very important things they did for citizens in South Carolina who might have to defend themselves or their homes against criminal attacks. Following the lead of Florida and other states South Carolina now has its own Castle Doctrine law. The Protection of Persons and Property Act, (Sec. 16-11-410 thru 450), became law without Governor's signature in June of this year. This law removes the duty to retreat if: The person is in a place where he has a right to be, including the person's place of business; The person is not engaged in an unlawful activity; and The use of deadly force is necessary to prevent death, great bodily injury, or the commission of a violent crime. Drug trafficking of cocaine base and methamphetamine was added to the long list of violent crimes (Sec. 16-1-60). A person who uses deadly force as permitted by the above provisions is immune from criminal prosecution and civil action. While I certainly question the Legislature's ability to take away a person's right to bring civil action, that is a matter for the courts to decide sometime in the future. With a new legislative session near I have to wonder what the boys/girls in Columbia will do to improve our rights to carry concealed in more states.

Self-defense, our first Right

When man first stood erect and picked up a rock to defend himself from attack by a wild animal he established his right to defend his life. Later he would learn that animals were not the only threats he would have to defend against, other people would also threaten to do him harm. To defend himself he would seek ways to improve his means of defense, his weapon. Ten thousand years later, very little has changed, man is still faced with the same threats as his ancestors. But today he has a wider range of weapons from which to choose and many of our states support this basic Right by passing laws allowing him to arm himself and giving him broader authority to use his weapon with Castle Doctrine legislation.
